If you want to build a chicken house for your yard, a good set of chicken coop building plans will be invaluable to you. If you do decide to design the coop yourself though, here are three tips on how to build a quality coop that will keep your chickens healthy and producing high quality eggs.

    1)   Build your coop with large windows and position it so that windows face south.

Building your coop with large windows will ensure that your coop ventilates well in the hot summer months. Facing the windows south will let plenty of sunlight in throughout the day. Good light is very important to the health of your chickens and their egg production.

    2)   Place your coop at a high point in your yard and tilt the floor towards the door.

Just like people, chickens don’t want to be damp. Placing your coop at a high point on your lawn will help ensure that water drains away from your coop, and not towards it. Tilting the floor slightly towards the door will let water drain from inside the coop naturally, which is of great benefit when you clean the coop.

    3)   Predators will dig, so consider putting your runs partially below ground.

Predators are one of the biggest threats to your chickens. Foxes, racoons, weasels, and even common dogs, can all injure or kill your hens, and many predators will dig or tunnel down if it means they can get at your birds. Burying the runs partially below ground will help ensure that predators can’t tunnel under and into your coop.

Following these tips will help ensure that your home chicken coop gives your chickens a safe and comfortable place to live. If you want your coop to turn out as good as possible though, consider investing in a good coop building manual. When you do build your coop though, whether the design is your own or from professional plans, remember that the safety and comfort of your hens is the number one priority, and that happy, healthy chickens produce the best eggs!
