Building a chicken coop is not as difficult as it may seem and taking a DIY approach is an excellent idea as you will be getting hands on experience in crafting your own coop. While purchasing a coop online can save you a significant amount of time, you also limit your options in that customizations will be difficult to make depending on your needs.
If you want to build your own, then you must have the proper building plans. Just as you wouldn’t want to travel without first knowing where you’re going, the same applies here. Always have the end result in mind and always plan ahead of time.
A great builder will know exactly what they need to do and will plan accordingly. While you may not be an expert in chicken coop building, you can separate yourself from the novices by utilizing these tips.
1. Build a bigger chicken coop than you had intended
If you plan on expanding in the near future, then start your coop right by building a larger one than you had intended. While you can certainly get started with a small coop, you are severely limited in how many chickens you can raise.
2. Build close to a water source
Your chickens will need fresh water on a daily basis so you will need to ensure that the water gets changed often so they are not drinking dirty water. Building a coop closer to a water source will make it more convenient for you instead of having to constantly go back and forth carrying buckets of water.
3. Protect your chickens from predators
In a perfect world, your chickens can live in harmony without fear of getting attacked. Unfortunately, that may not be the case. You will need to add extra security measures to your coop if you live in an area that is known for predators. Simply build a wired fence around the coop a few inches into the ground.
