The Two Most Often Occurring Mistakes That Occur When Making Chicken Houses

Does the thought of fresh organic eggs each morn make you rub your belly in anticipation of potential breakfasts? Can you close your eyes and imagine the smell your own eggs frying? Possibly you have made up your mind to raise chickens for this, or other reasons. If you are just starting to raise chickens then it is good to know that it can be very rewarding raising your own chicks. You may be surprised to learn, however, that it can be just as rewarding to build your own chicken coop.

It is important to read up on building chicken coops before you begin. You will need to plan a a couple of particulars. Faults are oftentimes made by novice chicken coop builders just because they did not give adequate consideration to each aspect of constructing their coops.

First, before you embark on your coop, understand the fact that you will inevitably make errors. This is true whenever you start anything new, not just building houses for hens. If you accept this before you start construction, you will be less likely to make more mistakes out of frustration when matters do eventually go awry.

The two most common errors can easily be fended off with a bit of preparation. Most mistakes have to do with the functionality of a chicken coop, though structural errors also happen. Positioning of windows and feeders are what inexperienced builders frequently overlook and place wrongly. Recognizing these errors, and why they happen, will help keep you from joining the ranks of those who have also made them.

Proper placement of windows tends to be the number one mistake made. Chicks need natural light. They crave it. Consequently, it is important to place the windows so the hens will get direct sunlight during the day. Regrettably, many people tend to forget about this until it is too late. If this occurs, you will need to add additional light sources to supplement natural light during daytime hours to keep your hens content.

The second most oft made mistake when building chicken coops has to do with feeders. Seasoned builders know that feeders should be placed at about 10-15 centimeters above the ground. New builders don’t give much thought to feeders, but it is very important that feeders are not too high or low.

The reason for this is both practical and

vital to hen well-being. If a chicken feeder is positioned high then small chickens will not be able to reach food and they will starve. On the flip side, if the feeder is situated too low, it will result in a huge mess. Be sure to take the time needed to measure the placement of your feeder so that both you and your hens are satisfied with the results.

Of course, these are only two of the many mistakes that can occur when building chicken houses. Do your homework before you begin, and make sure you ask questions if things don’t make sense. There are excellent e-books on this topic that are worth buying in.

It is very possible that after you complete your first chicken run you will be inspired to make a bigger and better coop. Make sure you follow a plan and listen to the experts so you can easily avoid frequent problems.
