We’ve all heard the stories. They are the stuff that legends are made of. You go out to check your birds and suddenly you realize that someone is missing.

Maybe there will be a feather or two left as clues. Maybe you won’t even have that.

The more unfortunate of you may have even had to clean up after a predator has got bored of their game and shot through. The sight of a mutilated pet is something that is forever etched into the mind of any caring ‘parent’.

When building a chicken coop there are a number of measures that you can take to prevent attacks from all predators. By doing them you can almost guarantee that your girls will live long and happy lives.

    1. Know your enemy.

Who are the animals in your neighborhood? Do they burrow? Do they fly? Do they crawl or slither? Do they hunt at night? Do they have sharp claws and tough teeth capable of making chicken wire look like candy-floss?

Do they make a grand entrance or are they more subtle with their methods? Do they live among your hens and feed off them?

Do they hunt for food or are they just in it for the sport?

By understanding who your local predators are and how they operate it will help you to make sure that you are building a chicken coop that is suitable for your environment.

    2. Building a chicken coop that will deter predators.

How many times have you spoken to a co-worker or friend that has been up all night trying to catch a fox or raccoon that has been stealing chickens? You may have even been that co-worker or friend.

There are many things that impact on our lives and sleep deprivation caused by trying to protect your flock should definitely not be one of them!

Whether it is by digging a fence deeper into the ground, putting a roof over your run, having a lockable door into your coop or installing heavy duty wire across the windows, by building a chicken coop that protects your flock from the animals in your area you will be able to rest easily knowing that your girls are safe in their coop.

Even simple measures like building your chicken coop in the open instead of under trees will aid your efforts.

    3. Building a chicken coop that is easy to maintain.

Seriously. One of the biggest and most common threats to your flock comes from mites and lice. Some live on the skin of your chickens, some in their surrounding area. At best they cause small wounds and irritation, at worst they can cause death. Because they multiply easily it is quite feasible to lose your flock to these predators.

Eradication is difficult so prevention is the best way to control them. The best form of prevention is by monitoring your chickens and by building a chicken coop that allows for easy cleaning of the nests and coop. They may have to be scrubbed regularly, so this is a big deal if your coop is difficult to work with.

We all love our hens and want them to stay happy and healthy. Protecting them from predators is just one of the ways to ensure that they are.
