Do you want to build a backyard chicken coop? Is this your first or maybe second attempt? Is the budget very limited?
If you answered yes to all then it’s OK. Building a small hen house or backyard chicken coop is easy peasy and I reckon that you could even get it done for as little as $50-$100 depending on how resourceful you are!
Now we don’t have the time or space to go into full details here, but there are five great starting points that will get you on the right track.
Check The Rules; If you live in an urban area and are concerned about your lack of space I’d strongly suggest you check with your local council to find out what the rules and regulations are on building a structure like a backyard chicken coop.
Sometimes there are even laws regarding keeping pets like chickens, so it’s great to check out what the rules are before you start. Your local council might also have some great ideas on building a backyard chicken coop or be able to point you in the right direction when building structures like this.
Check Your Plans; Yes, plans. Trust me on this. Life will be much easier if you go and get a set of plans to help you along.
It may only be a small enclosure, but your backyard chicken coop is still going to be a home for your chickens so you will need to know how big to make everything, where the best places for doors are, how to collect the eggs, how to clean the coop, where to put the roosts or nest boxes, do I need to continue?
This may seem obvious, but a backyard chicken coop is basically the same as a large chicken coop, just on a smaller scale. So if you are designing your own small hen house and you are stuck for ideas, just take a look at the bigger ones and see if you can scale them down to a size that you can manage.
Size; Most backyard chicken coop plans are small and are really designed for no more than 5 chickens.
It is really important that you don’t try and cram more into your coop. Not only will the hens health suffer, so will their egg production! Having said that, don’t be afraid of it being too big, there is no such thing, the more space that you can have for your chickens the better!
Health and Safety; The health and safety of the birds and you is first at all times.
Predators are a huge problem for anyone raising chickens and I’ve found that people who build small hen houses are often not as careful at safeguarding their chickens. Just because there aren’t as many of them, doesn’t mean that the ‘locals’ won’t be interested in stopping in for dinner. So make sure you protect your flock!
A great and simple solution is to make sure that the external doors and windows are covered in wire or mesh to stop predators from getting inside. You also need to ensure that the door leading to the outside for the chickens can be closed and locked at night time, keeping your flock safe inside.
Also make sure that you will not be at risk when you are collecting the eggs, cleaning out the coop or performing any of the other chores. You’d be surprised at just how many injuries occur because egg collection doors are too heavy, how many backs have been put out trying to move an awkward backyard chicken coop not to mention the discomfort of walking through and breathing in chicken poop!
Recycle; Yes, that is the word of the moment. When it comes to backyard chicken coop building it is also one of the best ways to save money. Substitute new timber for recycled. It doesn’t matter whether it is old or new, just that it is moisture resistant and hardy. In some cases it is even OK to use PVC piping – just check the plan.
Chickens are great pets and when your backyard chicken coop is done properly it’s just as much fun whether you have 2 chickens or 10!
Fortunately there are a great selection of plans for when you are building a backyard chicken coop that contain all the essentials and give you easy peasy step by step instructions. This makes building your own fantastic chicken house a breeze – In fact I bet it even makes your neighbors jealous and your eggs taste better! http://www.henhouseplansonline.com.
