An important issue to be considered in your pen plans is warmth in winter. Studies have shown that chickens housed in a warm pen in winter will lay more eggs than those in a cold one. In very cold climates special measures can be taken to make the chicken roosting places warm.

Double walls battened with lath outside and lined with building paper make a warm chicken pen. With single wall pens, double boarding on the north side is a protection. An outside shield of corn stalks or hay and litter is also effective.

5. Positioning
Position the pen so that it faces the south. It is cooler in summer and warmer in winter than one facing east or west.
