We’ve all heard the stories. They are the stuff that legends are made of. You go out to check your birds and suddenly you realize that someone is missing.

Maybe there will be a feather or two left as clues. Maybe you won’t even have that.

The more unfortunate of you may have even had to clean up after a predator has got bored of their game and shot through. The sight of a mutilated pet is something that is forever etched into the mind of any caring ‘parent’.

When building a chicken coop there are a number of measures that you can take to prevent attacks from all predators. By doing them you can almost guarantee that your girls will live long and happy lives.

1. Know your enemy.

Who are the animals in your neighborhood? Do they burrow? Do they fly? Do they crawl or slither? Do they hunt at night? Do they have sharp claws and tough teeth capable of making chicken wire look like candy-floss?

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — “High School Musical” star Ashley Tisdale pays a visit to a deserving family in this Sunday’s episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The teen (and tween) favorite is the next celebrity to take part in the show’s “Get On The Bus” program, for which stars volunteer to take part in the home building process.

Ashley traveled to Green County, Missouri to help the Hampton family move out of their 800 square foot cramped cottage, where eight of them had been living together after the parents graciously agreed to take in their four nieces and nephews rather than let them go to foster care.

“When I saw the family and the reaction to the house I just, like, started tearing up,” she admitted. “It’s like this really great deserving family and then also you see like all these volunteers and their family members and their friends just all getting together helping them. It’s just such a great feeling to be part of that.”

Ashley said she was thrilled when she got the call to come on the show because she watches it with her family every Sunday night. Plus, she’s got a leg up on some of the other celebrities who have participated in the show as her dad, Mike, is in the construction business. He tagged along as well, making this the first time she and her dad have worked together in front of the camera, “We definitely had some bonding and some squabbles,” she giggled. “He would be like, ‘No, do it this way,’ and I’m like, ‘Well, I’m gonna do it this way!’”

Of course, they worked it out, and in the end Ashley got very hands-on in the home building process. “I helped out a lot around the house. I did the floors in the entryway. I did a little of the designing of Hannah’s room, which is the little girl who was super excited to meet me. I also worked a little bit on the chicken coop in the back and the barn house as well.”

Ashley herself moved into her own new home recently, which, not surprisingly, was built by her dad – with an eco-friendly flare. “We went green. We did solar panels. We recycled the windows and the cabinets. It’s an amazing house. It’s done. It’s beautiful. It’s really great. I love it.”

Fortunately, for this 24-year-old, her dad is never far away. “He still comes over every morning because they still have little things, putting in stuff. They are down the street from my house. It’s not like they are far!”

There are many reasons to have chickens in your own backyard: they’re fun to watch, they bring us closer to nature and, like vegetable gardening, there is accomplishment in gathering food from your own backyard.

You will enjoy your chickens even more if you know this simple trick that will give you fresh eggs for breakfast all year long. Certain conditions need to be met in order to maximize egg production. There are factors related to overall health such as quality of feed and the hen’s weight. Even more, the number of hours that light is available is a predictor for quantity of eggs.

Typically your chickens will begin laying eggs between the twentieth and twenty-first week. They will continue to lay eggs for slightly over a year. The number of eggs and their size will be best during this time.

You can optimize both the health of your laying hens and the quality of the eggs that they produce by assuring that appropriate light is provided. Egg production is stimulated by daylight. This means that as the days grow longer, production will increase. Most of us will see a natural increase in egg production from December 21 through June 21 and a slow tapering between June 21 and December 21.

If you ensure that the chicken coop house that you build has electricity brought to it you can provide light during the decreasing daylight days. Then you won’t have to suffer with fewer eggs now that you’ve come to enjoy them so much. As the days shorten, turn on the light in the coop house, keeping the total number of lighted hours to 16 or 17 hours. It is best to do this incrementally, supplementing the gradually shortening days as the natural sunlight disappears. Doing this may increase the egg production by 20 to 30 percent over the results without the light supplement. The rule of thumb is: “Never increase light on growing birds, but never decrease light on mature laying hens.”

Here are some guidelines for a good lighting program:

1. The proper length of time every day.
2. A minimum intensity.
3. The proper color.

We’ve already said that the optimum number of hours that the laying hens should have light is between 16 and 17 hours per day. Additionally, the brightness of the light should be sufficient to clearly see the level of the feed while standing over the feeder. The best color of light is a yellow or orange tone. This is easily found when using incandescent bulbs. Alternately, warm-white fluorescent tubes may be used or a halogen light that produces a yellowish colored light.

A well designed chicken coop house will make it easy for you to provide all the conditions to keep your hens happy and healthy. Lighting is one of the primary ways to keep eggs coming your way. Other factors in health that are aided by a quality chicken coop design are: protection from theft, predation, direct constant sunlight, rain, excessive wind, heat and cold, sudden temperature changes and excessive dust. For your added enjoyment, the inside of the chicken coop house should be arranged so that feeding and caring for your chickens is easy and safe. A quality chicken house plan that is easy to follow and build will provide a firm foundation for enjoying your chickens.

There are a few tips that any new-time chicken owner should adhere to when deciding what chicken is best for them:

• A big factor in choosing your breed of chicken is the consideration of where you live. A small garden in the middle of the city isn’t exactly ideal for thriving chickens.

Neither is a small coop. Planning must be seen when building the coop, as this is the chicken’s home and the place where they will spend the most time. Ideally, for any chicken, a large garden should be a feature in your home, to allow the chickens to run freely.

The climate where you live also can pose a problem. If you are near the equator, it tends to be warmer, and whether you live about it or below it, it gets cooler.

• If it’s eggs you’re after, the Pekins and the Silkies are your guys. Purebred chickens tend to be more fragile and prone to illness than those which have been crossbred, so if you’re looking for a good breed, crossbreeding a Silkie and a Bantam has been reported as one of the best breeds of chicken you can get, as they are quiet laid back.

If you’re just after inexpensive egg laying, then you should choose the leghorn. Not as pretty as other chickens, they are the cheaper method. However some breeders have reported them as being high-strung.

• Some people aren’t after chickens for their eggs, and if you’re one of them, than the Cochin Bantam is your bird. With a sweet disposition, it is exceptionally well-mannered. If you’re looking for beauty, than a good choice is the Americaunanas. These are incredibly beautiful because of their feathers, resembling a Falcon in both colour and hooked beaks.

A chicken coop is a place where your chicken can perch, sleep and eat, and a safe place where they can lay their eggs. As an extension, an outdoor chicken run may be attached to it. So what are the things that poultry owners or chicken raisers consider when they plan to make a chicken coop?

First, the coop should be spacious enough so that the chickens can move around more freely. The minimum space that you should allot for each chicken is four square feet minimum. So if you are to keep 10 chickens, the coop should have a floor area that is approximately 40 square feet or more.

Second, when you build a chicken coop, make sure that you have an 8-inch minimum perch measurement per chicken. Remember to place trays below the perches for chicken droppings.

Third, consider the lighting, keep in mind that proper lighting incites egg laying. Most experts advise that the chicken coop should have one source of light per 40-square feet area. Place it above the feeding or water tray, the light will also serve as a heat source for the chicken and their eggs during the cold weather.

Fourth, there should be enough number of nesting boxes for each hen. Ratio should be 3 nests for every 8 chickens. These boxes should be 4 inches deep and should contain wood or straw shavings.

Fifth, the aeration is also an important factor to consider when you make a chicken coop. Small vents or windows should be strategically located so that fresh air can enter and allow moisture and odor to escape.

And last but not the least; bear in mind the chicken’s protection prior to building their pen. Be wary of the predators that might feast on your hens, their chicks and eggs. A wired fence to add as a barrier is most recommended. It should be sturdy enough to withstand pressure and the changes in weather.

Once you are aware of these factors, you are now ready to build the hen house for your chicken.

Anyone concerned about this[& with a back garden]can consider getting [or building] a small chicken coop.
Two or three hens will quickly “Recycle” organic kitchen waste [As ideed will a Compost Heap]However the Hens will say “Thank You” by keeping your family in regular fresh eggs.

As “Organic Waste” all eventually returns to the soil [Though mind in disposal you avoid attracting Rats] It is more a waste of money than material.

HIGHEST on MY PARTICULAR list of concerns about the envioronment are “Builders Skips” This week alone I have “Reclaimed” Fifty Eight [58] NEW Common House Bricks.

Just THINK of the energy and carbon footprint invested in a Housebrick, these take about 24 hours to bake in a Kiln, to then waste these by dumping them in a skip is insane.

When multiplied x thousands of skips “Nationwide” & Tens of Thousands of Bricks, These could save a glacier or three on their own!!

Re-Cycling Centres do a “Good Job” but I am aware of NONE that does other than send bricks to either landfill or crushing [More energy consumed] for roadstone.

Perhaps programmes such as BBC “Groundforce” encouraged the public to think “Skip” certainly in the pressure to complete projects in two days much material went straight into their skips.

When it comes to building a chicken coop you don’t have to be a carpenter or an expert, but you do need to consider certain factors. Getting it right takes planning and finding the right design. Once you’ve found the right design, stick with it. The end result is tremendously satisfying and rewarding. The chicken coop looks good, and you have a safe environment for raising chickens.

Many people nowadays, for financial and environmental reasons, are raising chickens and hens.

They are delighted to be certain of the source of their chicken and fresh free range eggs in a world where the food on our tables may have come from a dubious source.

There are other environmental reasons such as the chicken manure being a great fertilizer.

And of course the financial aspect of keeping backyard chickens is an important factor. You will need to build a backyard chicken coop of course to keep your hens healthy and happy and safe from predators. . . such as dogs and foxes.

So lets get the show on the road. . .

Firstly you will need to do some forward planning in advance. This will involve deciding how many hens you will keep, how many windows you will need and an important consideration here is the aspect or direction that you backyard chicken coop is facing.

You will also decide on how many feeders and how many nests you aim to provide and finally the level of access that your hens will have with the outside world. You will need to provide a free run for them but how large?

Secondly you will need to decide precisely where you will locate your backyard chicken coop and you must ensure that you have sufficient space around it for access for feeding and any essential maintenance that may be needed.

The aspect of your chicken coop will be important to determine whether it is exposed completely to the elements, the prevailing wind and the sun, and this will obviously be influenced by your location in the world and the climate.

Generally you will try to ensure that it receives plenty of

natural sunlight and not be too close to bushes or undergrowth which may bring unwanted visitors for your friends and investment!

Thirdly you need to put your plan on paper, even if it is a rough drawing. You can also download from the internet various plans, scale drawings and building lessons for your backyard chicken coop which can make your life a lot easier.

Once you are happy with your plan you need to assemble the materials you will need and it is much more efficient for you if you have everything in place before you start. You will need 2×4 timber, chicken wire, some concrete or cinder blocks and of course the usual DIY tools such as screws, nails, hammer and drill etc.

The only thing that remains now if you have prepared well is to carry out the construction of your chicken coop. When you are doing so make sure that you provide adequate security and ventilation for your hens and depending on your climate you may need to provide insulation for frosty nights.

An important point to remember is to provide for foxes or dogs digging down under your fencing so make provision for this at the outset by carrying your chicken wire and fencing down into the ground to prevent this from happening.

The time it will take to build your backyard chicken coop will be well spent when you have a ready supply of fresh free range eggs and well fed free range chicken in your pot on a Sunday.
