There are a few tips that any new-time chicken owner should adhere to when deciding what chicken is best for them:

• A big factor in choosing your breed of chicken is the consideration of where you live. A small garden in the middle of the city isn’t exactly ideal for thriving chickens.

A chicken coop is a place where your chicken can perch, sleep and eat, and a safe place where they can lay their eggs. As an extension, an outdoor chicken run may be attached to it. So what are the things that poultry owners or chicken raisers consider when they plan to make a chicken coop?

First, the coop should be spacious enough so that the chickens can move around more freely. The minimum space that you should allot for each chicken is four square feet minimum. So if you are to keep 10 chickens, the coop should have a floor area that is approximately 40 square feet or more.

Second, when you build a chicken coop, make sure that you have an 8-inch minimum perch measurement per chicken. Remember to place trays below the perches for chicken droppings.

Third, consider the lighting, keep in mind that proper lighting incites egg laying. Most experts advise that the chicken coop should have one source of light per 40-square feet area. Place it above the feeding or water tray, the light will also serve as a heat source for the chicken and their eggs during the cold weather.

Fourth, there should be enough number of nesting boxes for each hen. Ratio should be 3 nests for every 8 chickens. These boxes should be 4 inches deep and should contain wood or straw shavings.

Fifth, the aeration is also an important factor to consider when you make a chicken coop. Small vents or windows should be strategically located so that fresh air can enter and allow moisture and odor to escape.

And last but not the least; bear in mind the chicken’s protection prior to building their pen. Be wary of the predators that might feast on your hens, their chicks and eggs. A wired fence to add as a barrier is most recommended. It should be sturdy enough to withstand pressure and the changes in weather.

Once you are aware of these factors, you are now ready to build the hen house for your chicken.

Anyone concerned about this[& with a back garden]can consider getting [or building] a small chicken coop.
Two or three hens will quickly “Recycle” organic kitchen waste [As ideed will a Compost Heap]However the Hens will say “Thank You” by keeping your family in regular fresh eggs.

As “Organic Waste” all eventually returns to the soil [Though mind in disposal you avoid attracting Rats] It is more a waste of money than material.

HIGHEST on MY PARTICULAR list of concerns about the envioronment are “Builders Skips” This week alone I have “Reclaimed” Fifty Eight [58] NEW Common House Bricks.

Just THINK of the energy and carbon footprint invested in a Housebrick, these take about 24 hours to bake in a Kiln, to then waste these by dumping them in a skip is insane.

When multiplied x thousands of skips “Nationwide” & Tens of Thousands of Bricks, These could save a glacier or three on their own!!

Re-Cycling Centres do a “Good Job” but I am aware of NONE that does other than send bricks to either landfill or crushing [More energy consumed] for roadstone.

Perhaps programmes such as BBC “Groundforce” encouraged the public to think “Skip” certainly in the pressure to complete projects in two days much material went straight into their skips.

BUILDING A CHICKEN COOP

When it comes to building a chicken coop you don’t have to be a carpenter or an expert, but you do need to consider certain factors. Getting it right takes planning and finding the right design. Once you’ve found the right design, stick with it. The end result is tremendously satisfying and rewarding. The chicken coop looks good, and you have a safe environment for raising chickens.

For keeping chickens, the chicken coops have to be built in such a way that they protect them from the natural elements, as well as, prowling predators. That’s why when it comes to building a chicken coop, the location is an important factor. It needs to be constructed facing the sun, on a high and well drained area, so it can dry up quickly after rains. Proper ventilation is another crucial factor. You might like to install sliding doors and windows that can be opened to ensure proper ventilation when the weather gets hot. But, make sure that the doors you install open towards the inside, not outside and don’t forget to secure all doors and windows of the chicken coop.

As for keeping predators at bay, after you’ve finished building your chicken coop, surround it with chicken wire that’s around 1 foot deep. You can also cement the floor and use two cinder blocks for the beginnings of the wall, in order to protect your chickens from snakes and creatures that dig underground. Building a chicken coop makes great financial, health and environmental sense and this article gets you started with the essential points you must consider and provides a great resource for scale plans, drawings and construction details.

The first task in building a chicken coop is to plan and prepare well and have all the materials at hand with a good plan of exactly what you want to build. Many people nowadays, for financial and environmental reasons, are raising chickens and hens.

And of course the financial aspect of keeping backyard chickens is an important factor. You will need to build a backyard chicken coop of course to keep your hens healthy and happy and safe from predators. . . such as dogs and foxes.

Are you planning on raising chickens? Is this your first attempt? I’ll bet anything that you like that you have a load of questions and sometimes the more research that you do, the more questions that you end up with! I know that when I was first looking through all the chicken coop designs I got completely confused by the different ways that I could build a hen house!

The one thing that I did learn was that although there are many types of chicken coop designs there are also many important points that I had to take into consideration for my site and hens. I began to understand that if I ignored these essential things my dream to build a hen house and have organic, home-raised fresh eggs and chicken available in the kitchen would quickly turn into a nightmare.

I know that that all sounds a bit scary, but it is really easy to build a hen house so long as you have the right set of chicken coop designs. In fact I reckon that, if you really concentrated, that you could knock one up in a weekend. I also bet that if you were a bit sly you could also build a hen house for less than $100.

Ok, down to the detail. These are the essential things that you need to look for in your selection of chicken coop designs.

Purpose

Before you look at any chicken coop designs you need to decide why you want to raise hens. There is a difference between having them just as pets and having them for commercial egg production or for breeding. For example, if you want them to lay lots of eggs then you need to make sure that the plans include a large nesting area and nest boxes that are suitable to your climate. If you want to breed you will need an incubation area.

Space

You want to make sure that you have enough space for your hens. You might think that you are only going to have one or two chickens, but if experience has taught me anything, it’s that you are likely to want to expand much more quickly than you expected.

(You could even do what we did with one of our coops and choose a plan that you can build over again and attach to the original coop and run – this makes expanding your chicken coop a breeze).

Safety

You also need to ensure that the chicken coop designs that you choose will protect your hens from the weather and predators. Measures include wire over the windows and a fence that is dug into the ground to prevent animals burrowing under it.

Your safety is also important. I know that when my uncle was farming his chickens it was always a struggle to collect the eggs because the door that we got them from was so darned heavy! I still wince everytime I recollect the jammed fingers, elbows and toes from those days!

Materials

Remember how I mentioned being sly with the expense when you build a hen house? This is the place to cut costs.

You should make sure that any chicken coop designs that you look at include an extensive list of materials that you will need – including any hardware you will need – a cut list, easy to read diagrams and measurements. Not only will this make it really simple to build a hen house, but it is where you can substitute new materials for recycled ones.

Instructions

You also need to have in the plans information for laying the foundation for the coop, step by step, easy to follow building instructions and roof plan and rafter details. If you are lacking any of these elements in your plan you might find you get stuck or trapped mid construction! It is a reall beggar when you are stuck mid-project on a Saturday afternoon, and Monday is a holiday!

Free?

There are a large number of chicken coop designs out there and you should keep in mind that while many of the the free plans are great, most actually leave out some important elements in the building stages. So make sure that you do your homework before you begin to build a hen house.

Open two tabs. One to your Farmville farm and the other tab to your Facebook home page.
If you already have a Chicken Coop, remove your Chickens.
Sell your existing Chicken Coop.
Visit the Farmville Market- and you should now see Chicken Coop as unlocked. Do NOT buy yet. Leave this tab open.
