While chickens are not the messiest animals on the farm their house and run need to be kept clean, both for their health and for your own. A good set of henhouse plans should help you to create a home for your hens that is both comfortable for them and functional for you. A henhouse really does not need to be anything more fancy than four walls and a roof but it should follow some general rules to make it provide both elements with a minimum of fuss.

Depending on where you are planning to build you henhouse plans can be adapted to suit the terrain. You should look for an area of higher ground; this will help keep the ground around the henhouse drier by providing better water runoff. If your henhouse is going to be a permanent fixture then you should consider pouring a cement slab that slopes slightly towards the chicken run so that you can wash it out more easily. At the same time a layer of one or two cinder blocks to start your walls will help keep the damp and vermin out of your henhouse.

Your henhouse plans should include ideas on how to build nesting boxes for your hens. You should plan to build one nesting box for every 4 or 5 hens and they should be kept layered with clean wood shavings as opposed to straw, it’s much easier to clean up. Most henhouses have a feeder inside to keep the food out of the rain and snow. Your feeder needs to be about the same height as the top of your chickens’ backs. You should build your feeder to allow for 2 to 3 linear inches of space for each chicken that you have.

A large door should be part of your henhouse plans, this is so that you can easily enter you henhouse for cleaning purposes. It also helps to have a big enough door to be able to get in and remove the eggs from the nesting boxes. The overall design should make a safe place for your hens while making it easy for you to take care of them on a daily basis.

Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to an Eglu cube?

Go to your local pet store or garden centre and they will advise you on the nearest manufacturer of a wooden hen house
Buy Fur & Feather or the Poultry keeper from your local newsagent they will even order these papers for you.they are often advertised in these papers.
I think you would get them cheaper than the Eglu,I think they are way expensive,it would be just as cheap to buy your eggs from a local store rather than pay £500-£1000.for one of those.
