My Chicken Coop

When most people start to think about raising their own chickens the first though is that they will go to the local farm supply store and buy a pre-built chicken coop for their flock. As soon as they get to the store they generally get a fast case of sticker shock when they see the price of the chicken coops. If this sounds like you then you should know that you can construct a chicken coop yourself and save money, which after all is one of the reasons you decided to raise chickens in the first place.
Just because you want to provide your hens with a warm, safe place to live does not mean that you have to spend a fortune when you set out to construct a chicken coop. In fact if you are willing to shop around you will find that you can build your own coop for far less than you will pay to buy one of the coops in the store. Chickens are not overtly fussy when it comes to a place to get out of the elements and sleep at night.
They need a coop that keeps them warm and dry in the winter and cool and dry in the summer. A basic house shape works just fine. The first thing that you need to consider when you set out to construct a chicken coop is how many hens you are planning to raise, you can save money by only building a coop that is big enough to house the size of flock you are going to have. Keep in mind that you should allow for four square feet of floor space per hen.
While you might think that building a brick hen house is going to provide you with the ultimate in security and protection from the elements bear in mind brick is cold and expensive. You can build your hen house from lumber and use shingles or tar paper for the roof covering and save yourself a lot of money. If you really want to save money you can use scrap lumber instead of buying new, there are many places that specialize in selling used lumber that has been salvaged from building demolition projects.
If you stick to the basics when you construct a chicken coop you can do it without having to spend too much of your hard earned money, remember your chickens are a lot less fussy about where they live than you are about the coop you are building. Providing them with a home that is clean, dry and well ventilated can be inexpensive and still provide you with plenty of eggs on a daily basis
